AWNING TYPES

AWNINGS FAQS

What is an awning?

An awning is a covering made of fabric or other materials. This is attached to a building’s exterior to provide shade and shelter from the elements. Awnings can be retractable or fixed in place.

What are the benefits of having an awning?

Awnings can provide shade and shelter, protect outdoor furniture from the sun, improve energy efficiency and enhance the appearance of a building.

What types of awnings are available?

There are several types of awnings available, including retractable, fixed, motorised, manual, patio, window, door and commercial awnings.

Awnings can be made from a variety of materials, including fabric, aluminium, steel, wood and acrylic.

Some models come with integrated lighting as standard. However, other models will allow for integrated lighting as an optional extra.

We offer many customisation options, including fabric type, colour and pattern, as well as hardware options.

Can an awning be fitted to a bungalow or single-storey extension?

Yes, but it is likely you would need to have a spreader or gutter type bracket.

Can awnings be using in the rain and windy conditions?

Awnings are designed primarily to provide shade and protection from the sun. We recommend retracting your awning during rain and windy conditions to avoid damage and maximise the lifespan of the fabric and components.

Many of our awnings can be fitted with automatic wind sensors, which retract the awning automatically if high winds are detected, providing added peace of mind when the weather changes unexpectedly.

If you’re looking for a solution that can remain in use during a wider range of weather conditions, a pergola may be a more suitable option. Our team can help you choose the best product for your property and requirements.

How much does an awning cost?

Every awning is bespoke. Prices vary depending on size, fabric choice, controls and installation requirements. We provide a free survey and quotation for every project.

Do I need planning permission for an awning?

In most cases, planning permission is not required for a domestic awning installation. However, there are exceptions, particularly if your property is listed, located within a conservation area, or if the awning forms part of a larger building project.

If you’re unsure, our team can advise during your survey and recommend whether you should contact your local planning authority before proceeding.

Do you provide installation and how long does it take?

Yes, we provide a full installation service using our own in-house team of trained engineers. A typical awning installation can usually be completed within a few hours, although this may vary depending on the size of the awning and the installation requirements.

Whilst it is possible to install an awning yourself, we would always recommend professional installation to ensure it is fitted safely, securely and performs as intended. Once installed, our engineers will demonstrate how to operate your awning and make sure you are completely happy before they leave.

What warranty is included?

Our awnings are backed by a five-year manufacturer’s guarantee, but with proper care they will last for a lot longer.

How do I care for my awning?

Proper care and maintenance can extend the life of your awning. Regular cleaning and inspections are recommended and any repairs should be made promptly to prevent further damage.
